Struggle2Success Podcast
Welcome to the Struggle2Success Podcast.
I’m your host, Sterling Brown — and around here, we don’t hide from the hard stuff.
I didn’t launch this podcast from a polished place — I launched it while still healing. What started as my personal story has grown into something bigger: a space where we talk real about the struggles that shape us, the systems that confine us, and the current issues that weigh on our communities.
This isn’t just about surviving — it’s about transforming. From incarceration and fatherhood to mental health, relationships, reentry, and everything in between — this is where we get honest about the climb and what it takes to keep going.
So whether you’re tuning in from your car, your crib, or somewhere in between trying to figure it all out — you’re not alone. We’re in this together. Airing every other Saturday.
This is Struggle2Success — life is trials. Stay focused.

Hello Wonderful People and welcome back to Struggle2Success Podcast. I appreciate you being here wherever you are today… maybe you're on the road, maybe you're working, maybe you're just trying to get through another long day. And today we’re talking about something real. Something that doesn’t always get said out loud… how we overcome stigmas in the crowd, and why trusting the right people can feel so difficult when you’re trying to grow.
I remember the moment like it just happened… standing in a space where I didn’t fully belong anymore, but I wasn’t fully accepted somewhere new either. One foot in who I used to be… and one foot stepping into who I was trying to become. And I could feel it. The looks, the energy, the quiet conversations. People didn’t say it directly all the time, but you could hear it in different ways… you changed, you think you’re better now, you forgot where you came from.
And let me tell you something… that tension right there, that’s real. Because growth will put you in a position where people expect you to stay the same, but your mindset won’t allow it anymore. And if you take nothing else from today, hear this… growth isn’t forgetting where you came from, growth is refusing to stay trapped there. I’m going to say that again. Growth isn’t forgetting where you came from… growth is refusing to stay trapped where you used to be.
And the truth is, stigma has a way of following people who are trying to rebuild. Especially when you come from environments where struggle was normal, where survival was the mindset. Because survival teaches you how to move… but it also teaches you how to guard yourself.
You learn how to read people fast. You learn how to question intentions. You learn how to protect yourself emotionally and physically. And those instincts… they keep you safe in certain environments. But when you step into growth, when you step into spaces that require trust, cooperation, and consistency… those same instincts can start working against you.
Because now you’re not just dealing with how people see you… you’re dealing with how you see people. You start questioning everything. What do they want? Why are they helping me? What’s the catch?
And here’s the part that people don’t talk about enough… sometimes the hardest people to trust are the ones who are actually sincere. Because when you’ve spent years in survival mode, sincerity feels unfamiliar. It doesn’t match what you’ve been conditioned to expect.
So instead of accepting it… you analyze it. You doubt it. You wait for it to change. And sometimes… there is no hidden agenda. Sometimes people genuinely want to see you win. But survival conditioning makes that hard to believe.
And that’s where a lot of people get stuck. Because they’re trying to grow, but they’re still operating from a mindset built on protection instead of progression.
And let me take it a step further… there’s a difference between a crowd and a community. A crowd watches you. A crowd judges your past. A crowd remembers your mistakes and keeps you tied to who you used to be.
But a community… a community supports you. A community invests in your future. A community sees your growth and respects the work it took to get there. And if you don’t learn the difference between those two, you’ll keep trying to earn validation from people who benefit from you staying the same.
And that’s an uncomfortable truth… not everyone is going to celebrate your growth. Some people are used to the version of you that didn’t challenge anything. The version that stayed in the same place.
Because your growth forces people to look at themselves, and not everyone is ready to do that. So instead of changing, they question you. They doubt you. They label you. And if you’re not grounded in who you’re becoming, that pressure can pull you right back into old habits.
That’s why your environment matters more than most people realize. Because you will naturally start to align with what’s around you. If you’re surrounded by stagnation, you’ll start to normalize it.
If you’re surrounded by discipline, accountability, and purpose, you’ll start to move differently. That’s not opinion… that’s reality. So you have to be intentional about who you allow into your space. You have to be intentional about who you listen to. Because proximity influences behavior.
And that’s when everything started to shift for me. I stopped trying to prove my growth to the crowd… and I started protecting my growth within a community.
I stopped expecting trust to happen overnight… and I started allowing trust to build over time through consistency. I stopped pushing away every sincere person… and I started learning how to recognize the difference between real support and familiar patterns.
Because not everything that feels familiar is good for you… and not everything that feels uncomfortable is wrong. Sometimes discomfort is just growth happening in real time.
So take a moment and really think about this… are you holding onto survival habits that are blocking your growth? Are you surrounding yourself with a crowd that remembers your past, or a community that supports your future? And are you pushing away sincere people because trust feels unfamiliar?
Because the journey from struggle to success isn’t just about changing your environment… it’s about transforming your mindset. It’s about learning how to move differently, think differently, and trust differently.
And that takes time. It takes patience. It takes consistency. But if you stay committed to who you’re becoming, everything else will start to align.
